Prefixes are often added to the verb to change its meaning further. For example, the prefix ath-, which lenites, adds the meaning of "re-" or "again". Other prefixes are às- (from), co- (co-, com-), droch- (bad), eadar- (inter-), fèin- (auto-), fo- (sub-, under-), frith- (counter-), mì- (un-, non-), neo- (un-), os- (over-), ro- (pre-), tar- (trans-) and trìd- (trans-).

cluiche (play) becomes fèin-chluiche (autoplay)
còrd (agree) becomes droch-chòrd (have a tiff)
cosg (spend) becomes os-chosg (overspend)
deataich (evaporate) becomes trìd-dheataich (transpire)
dìol (pay) becomes ath-dhìol (repay)
imrich (migrate) becomes às-imrich (emigrate)
innis (tell) becomes ro-innis (predict)
leasaich (develop) becomes co-leasaich (compensate)
mol (praise) becomes mì-mhol (disparage)
pac (pack) becomes neo-phac (unpack)
sgaoil (disperse) becomes eadar-sgaoil (dissolve)
sgrìobh (write) becomes tar-sgrìobh (transcribe)
tilg (throw) becomes frith-thilg (reflect)
