The verbal noun is usually formed by adding a suffix to the verbal root, but there are many exceptions. Some irregular verbs form their verbal nouns from different roots. Some verbal nouns are the same as the verbal root.
The present participle is formed when the verbal noun is preceded by the particle ag, which becomes a' before a consonant. Note that the present participle of abair (say) is ag ràdh (saying).

bha i ag ithe she was eating
chan eil mi a' faicinn sìon I don't see anything
dè a tha thu a' dèanamh? what are you doing?
